Asensio: We Must Change Our Mentality, We Didn't Deserve to Lose
Thursday 11-12-2025
Real Madrid defender Raúl Asensio appeared in a press statement following the 2-1 loss against Manchester City in the sixth round of the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.

He began his analysis of the match by saying: "We feel both a bitter and sweet taste at the same time. We did many good things, and the team presented a completely different image from the one shown in the previous match here at our stadium, and that was very important."

He added: "Manchester City is a strong competitor, but today they didn't do everything necessary to win... We deserved more. But that's football; the team that scores more goals wins, and in this case, it was Manchester City. We need to improve."

He continued: "Did you feel that today's match was a test? Every match is a test, but this happens throughout life at Real Madrid. We know the pressure we face in every game, whether things are going well or badly. All I can say is that the dressing room understands the message that Xabi Alonso conveys, and the dressing room stands with Xabi Alonso 100%."

He emphasized: "The daily atmosphere at Valdebebas is very, very good. But yes, we are experiencing a slightly different situation, an unusual one for Real Madrid seasons. What we players can do is change the mentality, because it is the most important part, and it’s what everyone wants to see… a real change. Aurélien Tchouaméni said this a few days ago, that mentality is the first thing that must be changed. And today we saw this change."

He concluded about the clip of his fall inside Manchester City's penalty area: "I didn't watch the replay, but I felt a pull inside the area, and because of the force of the pull, I fell. We had seen a similar incident before... in their goal, Rüdiger couldn't jump because of the push he received, and in the penalty kick, the same thing happened but this time it was awarded. These are refereeing decisions, and we can't focus on them; we have to focus only on the football. This doesn't depend on us, but on the referee. Sometimes decisions go in favor of the opponent, and sometimes in our favor... but we have to focus only on what concerns us and nothing else."
