Real Madrid Wins Against La Liga Association in a New Case
Saturday 06-12-2025
Real Madrid Football Club expressed its satisfaction in an official statement with the ruling issued today by the Spanish Supreme Court, which once again confirms the correctness of our club's position in the dispute with La Liga.

This ruling fully endorses the arguments presented by Real Madrid against the illegal amendment promoted by La Liga Association in 2015, an illegitimate change that altered the way audiovisual rights were distributed among the clubs.

The Supreme Court has declared the "Second Additional Article" of La Liga's regulations null and void. This article, added in 2015 without any legal basis, aimed to change the distribution of television broadcast revenues for the 2015/2016 season, in a manner that contradicted the provisions of the law.

After this nullification is confirmed, the legal distribution applied to that season must be according to the old regulations, which were as follows:

60% of the revenues go to the first division clubs (La Liga).

40% of the revenues go to the second division clubs.

Equal distribution among all clubs within each category.

Accordingly, the legal distribution requires the payment of approximately 88 million euros additional to the clubs that played in the second division during the 2015-2016 season, from which they were unlawfully deprived. These clubs are: Alavés, Albacete, Alcorcón, Almería, Athletic Bilbao, Córdoba, Elche, Gimnàstic Tarragona, Girona, Huesca, Leganés, Llagostera, Lugo, Mallorca, Miranda, Numancia, Osasuna, Ponferradina, Real Oviedo, Tenerife, Real Valladolid, and Real Zaragoza.

Real Madrid will also receive the amount to which it was legally entitled—approximately 8.8 million euros—which it was unlawfully deprived of.

This ruling by the Supreme Court reaffirms the principle of legality and ensures that decisions affecting professional Spanish football are always made in accordance with the law and with complete transparency.

The Supreme Court completely rejected the appeal submitted by La Liga Association and fully upheld the previous ruling made by the National Court in favor of Real Madrid.

This ruling is of fundamental importance to the economic interests of the clubs that played in the second division at the time, as well as to Real Madrid itself.

The Supreme Court confirms in this ruling that Real Madrid and those clubs have suffered unlawful harm as a result of the actions of the La Liga Association.
