Neuer Closes the Door on the Possibility of Returning to the National Team
Friday 05-12-2025
Manuel Neuer, Bayern Munich's goalkeeper, firmly confirmed that the idea of returning to the national team is completely out of the question for him. His latest statement shuts the door on any speculation or calls for his comeback, especially given the current situation of Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen.

Neuer clearly stated his position in a post-match interview after Bayern Munich's 3-1 victory over St. Pauli in the German league, emphasizing that he made the decision to retire from international football after careful consideration, and that his full focus is now on his career with his Bavarian club.

Neuer's firm statements come amid growing calls in Germany for his return to participate in the 2026 World Cup, following the crisis caused by Ter Stegen's absence. However, Neuer (who will soon turn forty) affirmed that his decision is final and irreversible. He pointed out that despite feeling physically fit and the potential temptation to take part in the 2026 World Cup, he is fully convinced that the time has come to end his international career and focus entirely on his club, Bayern Munich.

Neuer officially announced his retirement from international football in August 2024, following Germany's exit in the quarterfinals of the 2024 European Championship hosted by his country. Neuer had a distinguished international career that began in 2009, during which he played 124 matches for the "Mannschaft," making him the fifth most-capped German player. His career was crowned by achieving the greatest dream of winning the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he also won the Golden Glove award for the best goalkeeper of the tournament. Additionally, he served as the team's captain for several years and participated in a total of eight major tournaments.
