Bayern Munich Director Calls for Neuer's Return to the National Team
Sunday 07-12-2025
Bayern Munich's sporting director, Max Eberl, publicly called for the return of veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to the German national team, describing him as "the best goalkeeper in Germany."

Eberl's statements came at a time when the German national team is experiencing instability in the goalkeeper position following Marc-André ter Stegen's injury. Eberl confirmed that the Bavarian club is very pleased with Neuer's contract extension and his good health, noting that the goalkeeper is "very eager to play."

This unexpected call-up comes despite Neuer (39 years old) announcing his retirement from international play in September 2025, following Germany's exit in the quarterfinals of the 2024 European Championship. Neuer had previously stated after his retirement that he is currently focusing on his career with Bayern Munich and ruled out the idea of reversing his decision. However, it seems that Eberl is trying to push for a change in this stance, taking advantage of the current vacancy in the leadership of the national team's goalkeeping position.

Eberl's statements come amid Neuer's strong performance with Bayern Munich this season, having played in 10 Bundesliga matches, conceding only 8 goals, and keeping a clean sheet in 5 of them. He has also participated in 4 Champions League matches. This performance shows that Neuer is still at the peak of his physical and mental condition, fueling hopes for his return to participate in the 2026 World Cup.
