Kompany: A Fan of Freiburg, and This Is My Response to Linart Karl's Comparison with Messi
Sunday 23-11-2025
Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany appeared at a press conference to discuss tomorrow's match against Freiburg in the 11th round of the German Bundesliga, to be held at the Allianz Arena.

He began his talk about the team's condition: "As for Manuel Neuer, we have to wait and see. He was a bit ill. We hope he will return to training today. Serge is most likely going to be unavailable; he felt something after returning from the national team. He might come back in the match following our game against Freiburg. Joshua Kimmich will definitely be present tomorrow. Hiroki Ito will return to the team roster."

He added: "Alphonso Davies is an amazing athlete. Although he hasn't reached 100% yet, he may already be the fastest player on the team again. With Fonzi, we need a bit of patience. If he plays one or two matches before the end of the year, that would already be great."

He continued: "Freiburg is one of the best examples in football. I am a big fan of consistency. They have a coach who was a former player at the club. They have never changed their style, only making small adjustments over the years. If you look at their scouting approach, you find that they know exactly the type of players that fit their style. Matches against them are never easy; they can compete with any team. All respect to the club and their organization. I am very excited for this match."

Regarding Uli Hoeness's praise: "Perfection does not exist. Even when we are good, we always want more — and that will never change. I handle praise just as I do criticism. I focus on the next match. We have a good feeling within the club, as well as in the overall atmosphere. I want to do my job, motivate the players, and make sure they make the right decisions. Anything can happen in the game, but I am confident that we are always capable of succeeding."

He added regarding the comparison between Linart Karl and Messi: "We have to remain objective — this is my role. Regardless of how many goals they score or what they deliver — whether it's a good or bad game — we must stay objective. When you play for Bayern Munich, you have to be exceptional even at this age. Players always want to achieve more, and that’s what matters. No matter how great the talent is, you can't buy experience; you have to build it. And that’s what we want to support. We want to help players maximize their potential."

Regarding the team's ideal season: "We have already drawn against Union this season. We didn't win the last match, and we haven't forgotten that, so it's not a perfect start. You always have to be strong at the end of the season — what you do at the beginning is just a bonus. We want to be stronger at the end. If our performances are good now, it makes the task harder, but we want to be stronger at the end of the season than we are now."

Regarding Freiburg having more time to prepare due to fewer international players: "That could be an advantage for them. But the truth is, we have a bigger budget than Freiburg and more experienced players. I don't want to use that as an excuse. There was no disappointment among our players; all of them qualified for the World Cup and returned with positive feelings. Of course, I would have preferred them to be with me all week, but we are used to this situation."

About his technical staff and his personal assistant, Rhodes Muniengi: "Stability plays an important role. Bram Geers was with us and now he has left — it's natural for someone to continue their career elsewhere. In general, I always appreciate calmness and continuity. Rhodes is my friend but he is also very important in my work. He deserves his place here; he is always present. He stays at the club headquarters until very late. And if there is someone who will turn off the lights when we leave, it will be him. Why did he wear Bavarian clothes in Kinshasa? I don’t know either (laughs). A little bit of Bayern Munich in Kinshasa isn’t a bad thing. There was an Oktoberfest in Kinshasa."

He added regarding Luis Díaz's absence due to suspension for the Arsenal match: "For him, managing his workload is not an option for tomorrow. He needs to help us with his energy and play for as long as possible. But honestly, the Arsenal match doesn't have much impact right now. The players are entering the Freiburg match with high energy. Most of them played just four days ago. We want to win this match and are not thinking about Arsenal at the moment."

Regarding Hoeness's praise that he talks only about football, unlike his predecessors: "You have to find your place in this job and also find your happiness. I care about the details and have always played a leadership role in my life. If we maintain consistency on the field, the players will know that even when things go wrong, we can move forward again. Creating this environment is what I love to do. I am very happy when I talk only about football. And when I have the opportunity to speak with Uli Hoeness or Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, I greatly appreciate the chance to learn from their vast experience."

He concluded regarding Díaz's suspension duration in the Champions League after his sending off against Paris Saint-Germain: "My information is that he is suspended for only one match. I don't know when the official announcement will be made, but I will be disappointed if my information is incorrect."
