Mariska: We Will Make Changes Against Wolverhampton, and This is Dilap's Situation
Enzo Mariska, the head coach of Chelsea, confirmed the readiness of striker Liam Dilap to return to participation during the press conference held today, Tuesday, ahead of the match against Wolverhampton tomorrow, Wednesday, in the fourth round of the English League Cup.
Mariska said: "Liam Dilap participated in the full training yesterday, and he is ready for the match tomorrow, but it is difficult for him to play a full 90 minutes after being absent for almost two months. We will gradually reintegrate him to reach full readiness."
Regarding the possibility of making changes to the starting lineup, the Italian coach explained: "We need to rotate to protect the players. If we play with the same lineup all the time, we will face difficulties throughout the season. I don't know the number of changes yet, but there will definitely be changes."
Mariska talked about the possibility of resting some stars, saying: "Enzo Fernandez, Caicedo, and Joao Pedro are players who may need rest for various reasons, and we will decide about them tomorrow."
The Chelsea head coach added about the team's performance recently: "Continuity is essential if we want a good season. After four consecutive victories, we dropped points against Sunderland, but now we are focusing on tomorrow's match."
On the team's ambitions in the tournament, he said: "We are only three matches away from the final, and we must have the desire to reach there. We will play the match against Wolverhampton first, then think about the next step."
Mariska responded to recent criticism directed at him regarding long throws, saying: "What I say can be interpreted in several ways. I did not mean that we will never use long throws, but at the moment we are not relying on them. Maybe in the future we will do that; I cannot control how people think."
The Italian coach also discussed set pieces, clarifying: "We are the second team that scores from set pieces after Arsenal, but we also concede goals from them. Set pieces are part of the game, and we need to improve our defensive balance in them."
As for Joao Pedro's recent difficulties, Mariska said: "The physical aspect is very important, and when you are not 100% ready, it is difficult to compete in the Premier League. Joao is not a problem; he is a great player who will score goals and create them for us, but he is not a classic striker who scores 25 goals in a season."
The Chelsea coach concluded his statements by affirming: "Stability is always better for everyone, for the players, the team, and the club, and over time we will reach the best possible level."
