Renard: The Iraq Match Was Emotional
Wednesday 15-10-2025
The French coach Hervé Renard, the head coach of the Saudi national team, expressed his happiness at qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

It is noteworthy that the Saudi national team qualified for the 2026 World Cup after a goalless draw with Iraq in the last round of the second group matches of the Asian playoff.

Renard stated in his remarks at the press conference following the draw with Iraq: "I thank the Saudis for inviting me to lead the national team, and we did not qualify except through unity."

He added: "The past months were not easy, but we qualified for the World Cup, thus achieving the most important goal."

He continued: "The match against Iraq was decisive and emotional; my mother passed away last February, and she was with us when we defeated Argentina. I last saw her in January after the World Cup, and she told me that I would not be able to watch the next World Cup."

Regarding his players, he said: "We did not show accuracy in finishing against the Iraq national team, and we need to improve."

About Fahd Al-Muwallad, he said: "I want to think of one person, as he scored the qualifying goal against Japan in 2018, and we dedicate this qualification to him."
