Iraq Coach Protests the Playoff System, Questions the Fairness of the Neutral Venue

Graham Arnold, the head coach of the Iraq national team, expressed his dissatisfaction with the mechanism of the Asian playoff qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, considering that the organization was not fair among all participating teams.

The Australian coach stated in press remarks that he is proud of the performance displayed by the Iraqi players during the playoff competitions, noting that the team showcased remarkable levels despite the difficult circumstances it faced throughout its journey.

Arnold added that the teams that received a rest period of up to six days, such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar, were more prepared to qualify for the World Cup, unlike other teams that only had three days of rest.

He continued by saying that what happened contradicts what was previously agreed upon, as the teams were informed that the playoff matches would be held on neutral grounds, yet he was surprised that the matches were held in the territory of the higher-ranked teams and among their fans.

Arnold pointed out that his team did not concede any goals during the tournament journey, but exited the competition due to goal difference only, considering that this reflects the defensive excellence and tactical discipline the players adhered to.

The Iraq coach concluded his remarks by emphasizing that the Asian Football Confederation needs to review the organization mechanism of the playoffs in the future to ensure competitive fairness among all teams, affirming that he is still proud of his players and what they achieved despite the painful elimination.
