Deschamps: This is Mbappe's Situation, and We Cannot Be Complacent Tomorrow
Thursday 09-10-2025
French national team coach Didier Deschamps appeared at a press conference to discuss tomorrow's match against Azerbaijan in the third round of the European qualifiers for the World Cup.

The coach said: "Preparing for a match against Azerbaijan is different from preparing against major teams, because the players are well aware of those teams, but in this case, the situation is less clear. The important thing is not to start the match thinking that we will make a difference at any moment. I prefer to settle matters quickly from the start."

He added: "Azerbaijan is not among the best European teams, but they recently drew with Ukraine (1-1), and they have seven players participating in the Champions League with Qarabag, who defeated Benfica. They are an organized team and will come to defend tightly, and we need to find the right solutions."

Regarding Kylian Mbappe, who suffered a minor ankle injury, he clarified: "Everything was planned according to his physical condition. He will train this evening, and if things go normally, he will be ready to participate tomorrow."

As for the lineup, the coach hinted at the possibility of making some changes: "The most important match is the one we will play tomorrow. We only have three days before the next match, so it is likely that we will involve a larger number of players over the two matches. The lineup may be a mix of key players and new ones."

Deschamps also warned against complacency against a team ranked 122nd in the FIFA rankings, saying: "No matter the name of the opponent, we represent France, and the high level does not allow for any complacency. Azerbaijan has nothing to lose, and they will defend intensely, so we must not give them any dangerous opportunities."

He concluded his remarks with a clear message to the players: "We must approach this match with the utmost seriousness. We are still in the qualifying stage, and we only have six points. These points are just as important as those we collected in September. Tomorrow's match is the most important right now, not what comes after it."
