The Future of Upamecano with Bayern Munich: Renewal or Potential Departure
The German newspaper 'Bild' reported that the future of 26-year-old French defender Dayot Upamecano with Bayern Munich is still under scrutiny, as his contract ends next summer in 2026.
The club is keen to extend his contract, and president Herbert Hainer clarified during the club's visit to the Oktoberfest: "Discussions are ongoing, led by Max Eberl and Christoph Freund, and I hope he stays with us for a long time."
The newspaper indicated that negotiations are facing difficulties, as the two parties nearly reached an agreement on the base salary, but the main disagreement lies in the signing bonus that Upamecano is demanding, which he based on the amount received by his teammate Alphonso Davies for extending his contract, estimated at around 17 million euros.
This amount is not one Bayern Munich is willing to pay, especially after the expensive renewals of Davies, Kimmich, and Jamal Musiala, forcing the sports management to tighten its financial belt.
Nevertheless, Upamecano feels comfortable in Munich and within the team, so the idea of extending the contract is still on the table, and negotiations are expected to continue in the coming days and weeks.
The same source noted that the possibility of Upamecano leaving for free next summer has attracted the interest of several major clubs such as Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, and Manchester United, while Upamecano continues to perform strongly under coach Vincent Kompany, having participated in eight out of ten official matches this season as a starter in central defense.
Sporting director Max Eberl confirmed last week: "I am not surprised by the interest of many clubs in Upamecano, and we are also interested in extending his contract; we are trying to convince him of Bayern Munich's project and we want to keep him."
So far, no final agreement has been reached regarding the extension of Upamecano's contract, and negotiations remain ongoing.
