Nagelsmann: The Substitutions Changed the Match, and This is What We Showed
Monday 08-09-2025
German national team coach Julian Nagelsmann appeared in press statements after the victory over Northern Ireland with a clean three-goal score in the second round of the European qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

The coach said: "The opponent was very difficult to play against, they rely on long balls, defend with ten players, and are very skilled at set pieces."

He added: "We started the match well and deservedly took the lead 1-0, but they equalized. Our rhythm dropped a little, which is normal after what happened on Thursday (the loss against Slovakia 2-0). The atmosphere was a bit calm between the halves. In the second half, we showed our true face. We played with great energy and strength and won the match deservedly."

He continued: "I am happy for Jamie Leweling, he had a great game. Not everything was perfect, but he did a lot of good things."

He added: "The substitutions changed the match. Nadiem Amiri had a great performance, Maximilian Bier added speed and runs behind the center-backs, Leon Goretzka was also much better than on Thursday. The body language was much better, even Jonathan Tah played ten good minutes, which is not easy against an opponent that plays a lot of long balls. We know there are steps to be taken, but I am happy with today's performance.
