Martinez: We felt Jota's spirit with us, and it was a tough match
The head coach of the Portuguese national team, Roberto Martinez, analyzed the significant victory achieved by Portugal over Armenia with a score of 5-0 at the start of the qualifying campaign for the 2026 World Cup, in a match that saw Cristiano Ronaldo and Joao Felix shine by scoring two goals each, in addition to a goal from Joao Cancelo.
The coach said: "It was a tough match at the beginning, but we turned it into an easy match thanks to seriousness and discipline. We started the match very well, and after the first goal, we maintained our style and continued to implement what we trained on. We stopped Armenia's danger in counterattacks, and I loved the connection between the players, especially with the contribution of the five substitutes who played and added a lot."
He added: "Joao Felix always needs to play regularly to showcase his abilities. I noticed he had a strong preparation period this season, perhaps the best in his career, and this reflected in his performance both today and against Croatia."
Regarding the game plan and freeing Vitinha: "We wanted to give him the freedom to advance to create surprises against a team that relies on tight marking. This concept we trained on was important in providing us with tactical flexibility."
On Cristiano Ronaldo's goal in the 21st minute: "Ronaldo's goal in the 21st minute - the shirt number of Diogo Jota - was a spiritual signal for us. We felt Jota's spirit with us since the first training session in the camp."
