Uzbekistan Aims to Make History in the World Cup Under Fabio Cannavaro's Leadership

Tuesday 09-06-2026
The Uzbekistan national team qualified for the World Cup for the first time in its history, becoming the first team from Central Asia to succeed in reaching the finals.

Qualification was secured after finishing the qualifiers in second place behind Iran, as the team clinched a direct ticket with a significant victory over Qatar, winning three goals to nil in the final round, without needing to play in the playoffs.

The team showed a clear balance between defense and attack during its journey, scoring 27 goals and conceding only 11 in 16 matches.

The Uzbek national team is expected to face a tough challenge in the tournament, having been placed in a strong group that includes Colombia and Portugal. Its realistic chances seem tied to the match against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which is considered its closest competitor for points.

Maintaining defensive solidity will be a crucial factor in the White Wolves' ambition to compete for one of the qualifying spots among the best third-placed teams in the group stage.

The team is led by Italian coach Fabio Cannavaro, the 2006 World Cup champion, who took on the role last October after securing qualification. He did not play a part in the qualifiers but has led friendly matches where he achieved positive results, most notably victories against Kuwait and Egypt, in addition to a loss against the Netherlands decided by a last-minute goal. Cannavaro hopes to leverage his extensive experience as a player and coach to create a new historical mark.

The team relies on its star player Eldor Shomurodov, the all-time top scorer and team captain, who has European experience with Genoa and Roma in Italy before later moving to Turkish club Başakşehir.

Defender Abdulkadir Khusanov stands out as one of the most promising rising talents after his transfer to Manchester City for 35 million euros, becoming the first Uzbek player in the English Premier League, with high hopes that he will be one of the key strengths in the World Cup.
