Ceferin Opposes Villarreal vs Barcelona Match in Miami
Wednesday 03-09-2025
Alexander Ceferin, the President of UEFA, expressed his dissatisfaction with the idea of holding the Villarreal against Barcelona match in Miami, USA, as part of La Liga, emphasizing that European football should be played within the old continent.

Ceferin stated: "We are not satisfied, but after a legal review, we do not have much room for intervention if the national federation and the relevant league agree. Nevertheless, we need to discuss this matter seriously in the future."

He added: "Football should be played in Europe, and viewers should be able to watch their teams in their own countries. They cannot travel to Australia or the United States to follow their clubs."

The UEFA President stressed the need not to turn this into a fixed rule: "If this event is an exception and has justifications, that's fine, but in general, European clubs should play in Europe because our fans are here, and this is part of football traditions."

Regarding the Super League, he said: "I met with Laporta, and it was a good meeting, but it was not a negotiation. The Champions League system and its coordination will not change, however, Barcelona and Real Madrid will remain welcome in the family of European football."

He commented on the expanded Club World Cup held for the first time this summer: "I am not worried at all; big clubs wanted the tournament for financial reasons, and if it is held every four years, that is fine from our perspective."

However, he warned of the physical exhaustion of players due to the abundance of tournaments: "Players are exhausted after the season, then participate in a tournament that lasts for five weeks; this is too much. There is the World Cup, the Club World Cup, the Euros, the Copa America, and the Africa Cup of Nations in the winter; it’s an endless cycle."

Regarding multiple ownerships in clubs, he stated: "Allowing the same owner to own two clubs participating in the same competition is unacceptable. If competition loses its credibility, we will lose everything."

He explained that UEFA studies the issue on a case-by-case basis, saying: "There are temporary solutions like the blind agency system, but they are not ideal, and we continue to discuss them in depth."
