The Asian Football Confederation Ignites a Dispute Between Al-Zawraa and Al-Shorta
A wide-ranging debate has emerged in the Iraqi sports arena between the administrations of Al-Zawraa Club and Al-Shorta Club, following an unintended error by the Asian Football Confederation in its report on the AFC Champions League.
The error occurred when the Asian Confederation stated that Al-Shorta had won the Iraqi league title 16 times, which is the same number included in the club's calculations, while records from the Iraqi Football Association indicate that the actual number of Al-Shorta's titles is 8 times, as the remaining championships belong to the Police Mechanization Club, which previously won what is known as the Institutional League.
In this context, a member of the administrative board of Al-Shorta Club, Tahseen Al-Yasiri, said:
"We have everything that proves that Al-Shorta is the first in achieving Iraqi titles, and we have provided evidence to both the Asian and Iraqi federations."
He added: "I say it with complete objectivity and honesty, Al-Shorta is the leader of Iraqi football, and Al-Zawraa is its runner-up, with Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya in third place based on the titles we have achieved, and the silence of the Iraqi federation regarding Al-Shorta wearing the jersey of 16 titles is evidence of the acknowledgment of its titles, and this will be done through official letters and documents very soon."
In response, the president of Al-Zawraa Club, Haidar Shanshul, commented on the statements, saying: "I said it and I repeat it, the rise of the lion has disturbed others, the competition this season is strong, and the return of my team to its natural position has disturbed some, when the Al-Nawras team was going through difficult circumstances, no one appeared to demand the restoration of the club's glories."
He continued: "History is not distorted, the Al-Nawras team is the leader of Iraqi football, and the Police Mechanization Club is currently present and is the owner of the previous achievements that Al-Shorta Club is demanding, therefore, the white team remains the leader of Iraqi football, and the club that has won the most titles is the Al-Nawras team with 14 titles, a number that no team in Iraq has reached."
