Kompany: Tomorrow is our first final in the DFB Cup, and we are thirsty for the title
Vincent Kompany, the head coach of Bayern Munich, stressed the importance of his team's upcoming match against VfB Wiesbaden in the first round of the DFB Cup, scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday, confirming that the team has set its sights on the tournament this season.
Kompany said: "This is not an ordinary match; the thirst is greater, as the time since our last title has now become longer. Tomorrow is our first final, and that is the most important thing."
He added: "We know we are the best in Germany in terms of quality, but that is not enough. In the cup, you must have a greater desire than others to win; the motivation must always be present, even against lower-division teams."
The Belgian coach's statements come amid Bayern Munich's absence from winning the DFB Cup since 2020 and their early exits in the last five seasons, having been eliminated in the second round on three occasions and losing twice to lower-division clubs.
Kompany confirmed that he does not intend to rest his players, noting that Leon Goretzka's participation is in doubt due to a slight ankle sprain sustained during the big win over Leipzig 6-0. He said: "If Goretzka participates in the final training today, he will be available for the match."
