Enrique: Tottenham was among my options, and we want to make history
Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique appeared at a press conference to discuss the match against Tottenham on Wednesday evening in the UEFA Super Cup, held at the Friuli Stadium in Italy.
The coach said: "We started training with the joy of being together again, we always strive to continue writing history. Our goal is to win the Champions League twice in a row. Last year, no one expected us to win the title."
He added: "It would be a dream to win the Champions League for the second consecutive time. But we are happy to achieve this dream!"
He continued regarding the Ballon d'Or: "These awards are very important in the world of football. But our goal is to show that the star is the team; that’s what we did last season. I believe we achieved our collective goals, not individual ones. Individual awards are not our goal."
He emphasized: "We have a chance to make history in Paris and win titles. I saw four of my players playing in the corridor when I arrived at this conference. That is our essence, and I am happy to have these players."
He followed up: "We have a mentality of improvement and developing the team. It will be difficult, but this is our mentality in preparing for the new season; it will be very special because we will have the opportunity to make more history. It is a real motivation for us."
Regarding the exclusion of Donnarumma: "These are always tough decisions. He is undoubtedly one of the best players in his position. But we were looking for a different type of goalkeeper; the decision rests with the club that supports me. Given Gigio's level, it is natural to have doubts. But my goal is always to improve the team."
He concluded: "Well, there were some options for me in the last six months before I came to Paris Saint-Germain, and Tottenham was one of them. It will be difficult for us because Tottenham has been training all last month while we are in our first week, but that is not an excuse."
