Kompany: We Will Face the Champion of Europe, and That's Our Goal
Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany appeared at a press conference to discuss the upcoming match against Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup this Saturday.
The coach said: "Paris Saint-Germain is the current Champions League champion. They are a strong opponent and have achieved significant success recently, and I expect them to be at their best. It is a big challenge for us, and I always love to play against the best opponents. That's why we are here."
He added: "Paris Saint-Germain has developed wonderfully, which is impressive; they are a complete team. We need to work as a full team both defensively and offensively. Tactics can always change, but in such big matches, it is about principles. We won the last match against Paris Saint-Germain, but it was a tough match. We want to win, and that is what matters."
He continued: "Is Musiala ready to play? We will see today; the important thing is that the player is 100% mentally ready. Fortunately, he is still with us in the tournament after being substituted against Boca Juniors. We will see what his role will be, but he has trained in the past days and is heading in the right direction. We will decide what is best for the team."
Regarding the weather, he said: "This time is the first time I haven’t sweated during the press conference. This difference is significant; we always try not to let things we cannot control become larger. The same applies to both teams, and the weather is part of that. If a person focuses mentally only on the heat, they lose something in advance. Water breaks are important; they help. It is also important for players to do the right things before the match to have the right energy. After that, the mental aspect becomes important: we can show understanding and create space to protect players, like water breaks. But in the end, performance must be delivered; otherwise, the other team will endure the pain and win in the end."
He followed up regarding players at risk of suspension if they receive a yellow card: "Our goal is to qualify. When we qualify, we will see what happens in the next round, but this will not play an important role before tomorrow's match. We are playing against the champion of Europe, and we need to focus entirely on the match."
About Laimer's role, he said: "Laimer has proven himself this season. The role he plays fits perfectly with his characteristics. He has a significant impact on the system, and we expect him to give his all; the task will not be easy, but it's not his first time."
He noted: "Our mood is good, and most players are ready and at 100% fitness. This is very important before a big match; we are playing against a team that won everything last season. This only gives us more motivation, and it is exciting to see the development of Paris Saint-Germain. After we won against them in November 2024 – it wasn’t an easy time for the coach back then, I still remember that. After the press conference, I passed by the coach and heard the tough questions: that he didn’t do his job well and many skeptical questions. But I also remember that it was always said: Paris could have won 5-0, even if the match ended 1-1. It wasn’t about team spirit or control; now everyone is talking about PSG’s development, and it’s nice to see how the strength of discipline pays off in such moments. This is not just praise for Enrique, as he managed to achieve this development; now we are talking again about a match against Paris, but from a completely different perspective. What has happened over the past six months is exciting."
He remarked: "Against Inter in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, we had 9 injured players; now we are in a completely different position; we no longer suffer from nine injuries. We wasted many opportunities back then, and I hope we can take advantage of the chances tomorrow. The key is the desire to qualify for the next round and for the players to give their all to achieve that."
He added: "The favorite team to win? I don’t look at numbers and statistics. I understand how things can be perceived, but we must first do the required work. We can talk about the favorite team to win, but in the end, it’s about the team that will win in the end. Now we must give everything we can to achieve victory."
He concluded: "There are many good ideas at Paris Saint-Germain, and I am sure we also have some good ideas. What the team does well goes beyond just tactics; Paris Saint-Germain presses hard and will play aggressively, and the same is said about us. After that, it must come down to individual and collective performance – and then the ball must go into the net. It will be a great match."
