FIFA Announces New Refereeing Technologies for the 2025 Club World Cup
Saturday 07-06-2025
In a move aimed at enhancing transparency and improving the fan experience, the International Football Federation announced the implementation of a range of technological innovations during the upcoming Club World Cup, which will be held in its expanded format for the first time in the United States, starting from June 14, with an opening match between Egyptian Al Ahly and American Inter Miami.

FIFA revealed that the tournament will witness the use of cameras mounted on referees, a technology that recently received approval from the International Football Council, and its footage will be broadcasted via the exclusive tournament broadcaster 'DAZN', allowing fans to see decisions from the referee's perspective.

Additionally, video assistant referee (VAR) reviews will be broadcast live on stadium screens and fans' devices, a historic step aimed at reducing refereeing controversies, and this feature will also be implemented in La Liga starting from the 2025/2026 season.

The innovations also include the adoption of semi-automatic offside technology developed by Hawk-Eye, to provide accurate and immediate decisions through movement data analysis.

Among the procedural updates, digital tablets will be used instead of paper to manage substitutions, aiming to speed up the process and provide greater clarity for coaching staff regarding remaining substitutions.

These modifications are part of FIFA's vision to integrate technology into the game, presenting a modern model that keeps pace with developments in global football and offers fans a more interactive, precise, and transparent experience.
