FIFA Issues New Rules Regarding Double Touch in Penalty Kicks
Tuesday 03-06-2025
The International Football Association Board, responsible for legislating the laws of football, announced new changes regarding the double touch during the execution of penalty kicks.

The Spanish network "Cope" reported that FIFA decided to legislate new rules concerning this matter, following the controversy that occurred in the match between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid this season in the Champions League.

FIFA decided that if a player touches the ball twice unintentionally and it is scored, the penalty kick will be retaken. However, if the kick is not scored and the ball returns to the executing team, a direct free kick will be awarded to the opponent, and the penalty kick will be considered missed.

The match between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in the Round of 16 of the Champions League featured a controversial moment during the penalty shootout when Julian Alvarez successfully converted a penalty kick, only for the referee to disallow it because Alvarez touched the ball twice during the execution.

Real Madrid then advanced to the quarter-finals of the Champions League through penalties (4-2), having won the first leg 2-1 and lost the second leg 1-0.
