Benzema Topples Former Union President: Behind the Scenes of the Hidden Football Conflict
Sunday 18-05-2025
Sports journalists revealed the real reasons behind the dispute between Karim Benzema, captain of the Union team, and the former club president, Louay Nazer, which ultimately led to the latter's resignation despite winning by acclamation.

Journalist Mohammed Al-Bukiri explained that Nazer was seeking to sign Italian coach Stefano Pioli and Brazilian winger Galeno, but Benzema objected to both transfers, asserting that they did not fit the team's identity.

The French star preferred coach Laurent Blanc over Pioli, confirming that the French coach was closer to the philosophy of the Union team, and he supported the signing of Dutch player Steven Bergwijn instead of Galeno, who moved to Al-Ahli.

Journalist Adnan Jastaniah revealed that Nazer had an official mandate to negotiate with players and coaches, but his powers were suddenly revoked and transferred to Benzema, placing the president in an awkward position that forced him to resign.

Louay Nazer resigned on July 15, 2024, less than three weeks after winning the elections, to be succeeded by Louay Mushabi, whose term ends this May, and he has decided not to run again according to reports.

Benzema's vision proved successful after the Union was crowned with the Roshan League title two rounds before the end, and the team is now preparing to face Al-Qadisiyah in the King's Cup final at the end of this May.
