Flick: The match against Real Madrid is always special, and we will fight for victory
Hans Flick, the head coach of Barcelona, spoke at a fiery press conference ahead of the anticipated Clasico match against Real Madrid, as part of the 35th round of the 2024/2025 La Liga season.
Barcelona tops the La Liga standings with 79 points, four points ahead of Real Madrid, before the decisive match taking place on Sunday evening at 5:15 PM Cairo and Mecca time, at the Montjuïc Stadium, after achieving a significant 4-0 victory in the first leg at Santiago Bernabéu.
Flick said: "We are doing very well, after the loss to Inter Milan in the Champions League, we know it hasn’t been easy, but we have four matches left, the most important of which is the Clasico, and we trust ourselves and what we want to achieve."
The German coach revealed the status of the injured players, saying: "I don’t think Lewandowski or Alejandro Balde will participate in the starting lineup, we have Gerard Martin and the rest of the players in good condition, they might participate in the second half."
Regarding the atmosphere of the Clasico, Flick added: "We have talked a lot within the team, and we realize that the Clasico requires maximum effort, we must be more aggressive and control the game from the start, and we invite the fans to support us because we are playing at home."
Flick confirmed the goalkeeper position: "Yes, Szczęsny will be the starting goalkeeper tomorrow against Real Madrid."
On his future, he said: "This is a question for Deco, but I believe Szczęsny wants to continue with us, he is calm, positive, and confident in himself."
He continued: "Winning the La Liga title would be a crowning achievement for a whole season's effort, the tournament is long, and if you reach the end at the top, it reflects the real work, and therefore I consider it the truest title."
Flick refused to talk about any relaxation within the team, saying: "There is no complacency, the players are excited to win the Clasico and secure the title, you have seen what they have offered this season, they are giving everything they have."
Flick praised the Spanish defender Iñigo Martínez, stating: "Iñigo is not an ordinary player, he has a great vision and shows leadership spirit in training and matches, I am very happy with what he is providing."
Flick revealed his tactical philosophy against Real Madrid: "From the beginning, we were clear about the high pressing style, the players gradually adapted and performed wonderfully, the pressing is not limited to the defense line only, but also in the areas where the ball is present."
Flick concluded his statements by saying: "Facing Real Madrid is always special, we are not worried about maintaining the lead, but we focus on winning, we are playing at home and we will fight to earn the three points."
