The historic defeat that RC Lens suffered against Como, losing 1-9 on Wednesday evening, was not just a harsh loss in the UEFA Champions League, but it placed the French team in a significant crisis that could extend its repercussions into the remaining rounds of the league phase, given the decline in its results and the difficulty of its upcoming matches.

RC Lens has entered the competition's history in the worst way possible, suffering one of the heaviest defeats at home in the UEFA Champions League at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, making it the biggest loss ever for a French club in the history of the UEFA Champions League. Yannick Cahuzac, the team's coach, described what happened as a "feeling of humiliation," admitting that his team was outperformed in every aspect.

In terms of results, RC Lens currently sits in 33rd place out of 36 teams, having collected only three points from their first four rounds. Despite a good start with a win against SK Slavia Prague away from home by a score of 3-2, they lost to Sporting Lisbon 0-2, then to Club Brugge by three goals to nil, before a heavy defeat against Como.

The French team is now out of contention for finishing in the top eight of the league, while its chances of securing one of the top 24 spots qualifying for the playoff round have diminished, with probabilities not exceeding 13.9%, according to forecasts from the "Football Meets Data" platform.

Concerns are growing as RC Lens have already faced their opponents from the second and fourth levels in the rankings, Sporting Lisbon and Club Brugge, as well as SK Slavia Prague and Como, meaning that the upcoming tests will theoretically be more challenging.

Thus, RC Lens finds itself facing a daunting task to salvage its European campaign, especially since two of its four remaining rivals belong to the top European clubs, making it extremely difficult to compensate for the disastrous start and putting the team at risk of an early exit from the competition.
