After Ebnoutalib, Wael Mohya prefers Germany over Morocco
Morocco's national team has suffered another blow in the dual nationality talent file as Wael Mohya, a midfielder for Borussia Mönchengladbach, has decided to represent the German national team after receiving his first call-up to join the senior squad. This marks the second similar case in just a few weeks, following Younes Ebnoutalib's choice to defend Germany's colors.
The list announced by coach Jurgen Klopp today, Thursday, in preparation for the upcoming challenges, includes the name of Mohya, who is 17 years old and has caught the eye with his performances in the Bundesliga, having scored two goals in consecutive matches for Borussia Mönchengladbach. It is worth noting that he was born in the city of Mettmann to Moroccan parents.
According to the website 'Afrik Foot', the Royal Moroccan Football Federation was aware of Younes Ebnoutalib's interest in the German national team, while the technical staff of the 'Atlas Lions', led by Wael Mohya, attempted to communicate with him in the past period to persuade him to join the gathering in November.
The source indicated that Mohya requested time to think about the Moroccan offer, without excluding the possibility of representing Morocco permanently. However, Jürgen Klopp has entered the negotiations through direct contact with the player and his family, which contributed to determining his international direction in favor of Germany.
Klopp expressed his admiration for the potential possessed by the Borussia Mönchengladbach player, considering it exceptional for a 17-year-old to deliver impressive performances in the Bundesliga. He explained that the call-up is to give him the opportunity to experience the atmosphere of the senior national team, train with the group, and gain experience.
The German coach emphasized that this step does not include any promises regarding Mohya's future, as the player's continuation will remain linked to his performances and behavior both on and off the pitch.
These developments bring to mind the case of Younes Ebnoutalib, the forward for Eintracht Frankfurt, who chose to represent Germany last September, despite the Moroccan federation's interest in securing his services.
According to the same report, Klopp played a significant role in convincing Ebnoutalib to choose Germany, after the player summed up his position with the phrase: "When Klopp calls you, you have to go."
