French interior minister settles debate over Paris and Barcelona clash
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez has settled the debate surrounding the potential postponement of the match between Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, scheduled for Tuesday evening at the Parc des Princes, as part of the UEFA Champions League. He confirmed that the match will take place at its scheduled time, despite the security and social disturbances currently affecting the country.
Darwin Núñez clarified during statements made on Monday from the Prime Minister's office in Matignon that the authorities have discussed the possibility of postponing some events. However, this option does not include the upcoming clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, nor the match between Lille and Galatasaray scheduled for Wednesday evening in the European competition.
French Interior Minister has stated that the upcoming European matches will not be affected by the current situation, indicating that the authorities are committed to holding them as planned.
These statements come amid security tensions in several French cities due to violence and looting, coinciding with increased security deployments, raising questions about the measures that authorities will take to secure the upcoming matches.
The clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona is expected to attract over 45,000 fans to the Parc des Princes, including around 2,200 from the Catalan side. Although the match has not been classified as high-risk, authorities plan to deploy a large number of mobile security units around the stadium to ensure the safety of the fans.
In a related context, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu revealed that he has asked governors to take measures to impose a partial and geographically specific curfew on Monday evening, aimed at protecting citizens and property, especially stores at risk of vandalism and looting.
The areas covered by these measures are expected to be determined on Monday afternoon after consultations with the relevant mayors.
French authorities have confirmed that preparations for the Paris Saint-Germain versus Barcelona match will continue as scheduled, focusing efforts on tightening security measures and ensuring the safety of fans amid the current situation in the country.
