Al Zawraa suffered a shocking and painful defeat against their hosts Al-Shamal, losing by a goal to nil in the match held at Newroz Stadium in Sulaymaniyah, as part of the tenth round of the Iraqi Premier League. This defeat left the Al-Nawras with eighteen points in fourth place and raised questions about the team's performance.

Looking at the course of the match, the reasons for the defeat can be summarized in three main points that were clear to everyone.

Al Zawraa appeared in today's match without any real spirit, lacking fight and desire to win, as if the players entered the match believing that victory was assured due to the difference in names and history.

There was no spirit in Newroz, with no strong tackles, no high pressing, and no reaction after conceding the goal in the 18th minute by Mujtaba Ali.

The team was strangely submissive, even the chances that arose were lacklustre, mere timid attempts unworthy of a team competing for the title. Al-Shamal was more eager and combative, and that is what decided the match.

The second reason is the obvious fatigue that has struck the team. Al Zawraa are coming off a strong and difficult away match against Qatar SC in the Gulf Champions League, which ended in a 1-1 draw. It was a long journey and a quick return without sufficient recovery time.

This fatigue was clearly evident in the second half, where the physical rate dropped significantly, with slow movements, many inaccurate passes, and an inability to keep up with the enthusiasm and drive of the young Al-Shamal players. The team could not maintain a high attacking rhythm for more than ten consecutive minutes, which is clear evidence that the physical aspect let the team down today.

Coach Basem Qassem cannot be absolved of responsibility as he entered the match with a somewhat cautious lineup and delayed making substitutions despite his team trailing by a goal since the 18th minute.

The insistence on depth despite Al-Shamal's strong defensive block and the ineffective use of the flanks made it easier for the opponent's defense. The substitutions made in the second half did not change the team's shape; rather, they increased the attacking randomness, and there was no clear solution to break the defensive block imposed by Al-Shamal.

Today's loss is a real wake-up call for Al Zawraa ahead of the big derby against Al-Shorta. If they want to compete for the title, they must first regain their spirit, manage the pressure of matches intelligently, and quickly correct their technical mistakes.
