Ander Herrera donates his entire salary to his club
Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera has decided to forgo his entire salary in favor of the Real Zaragoza Foundation, as he returned to the club this summer. This gesture reflects his desire to give back to the club that launched his career in football and to help it overcome its current crisis.
Ander Herrera is 37 years old and has chosen to end his football career at the club where he began his professional journey, after finishing his stint with CA Boca Juniors.
The Spanish player has previously worn the shirts of Athletic Bilbao, Manchester United, and Paris Saint-Germain before deciding to return to Zaragoza, which was relegated to the Spanish third division this summer.
Ander Herrera, during an appearance on a podcast with his former Manchester United teammate Rio Ferdinand, said: "The club is probably going through the worst period in its history, and I wanted to come back to help, at least as a professional player."
He added: "I owe a lot to this club. Without Real Zaragoza, I wouldn't have become a professional player. In this difficult moment the club is going through, it is our responsibility to help the team and the club."
The Spanish midfielder explained that he no longer needs the money he earned during his career, saying: "I am very proud of my career, and of what I have achieved on the sporting level and the money I have earned. I no longer need it. I wanted to play for free and help the city where I grew up."
According to the report, Real Zaragoza must pay the legal minimum wage to Herrera, which amounts to €25,000 annually. However, the player has decided to donate the entire amount to the club's foundation. He concluded his remarks by saying: "I want to feel proud of what I have given during my career when I retire, which may happen soon."
