Athletic Bilbao return to Bilbao after final cancellation of their match against Rayo Vallecano
Athletic Bilbao returned to Bilbao on Saturday evening after the permanent cancellation of their match against Rayo Vallecano in LaLiga, following a stoppage in the 24th minute due to the home fans throwing plastic balls and paper airplanes onto the pitch.
The Basque club announced that LaLiga informed them it was impossible to complete the match today, Saturday, or tomorrow, Sunday, prompting the team's delegation to head to the airport to return to Bilbao.
The match was initially halted before resuming, but the throwing of paper objects onto the pitch recurred, leading to the decision to cancel it permanently.
The events came as a protest from some Rayo Vallecano fans against club president Raúl Martín Presa, while the date for the resumption of the match remains unknown.
