Important reasons grant Arnold immunity despite elimination from Gulf Cup 27

Australia's Graham Arnold has concluded his first experience with Iraq at the AFC Asian Cup, exiting the tournament after a 0-2 loss to Saudi Arabia in the final group stage match on Tuesday evening.

Under Arnold's leadership, the former Asian champion collected 4 points in the Gulf Cup 27, after drawing with Oman 1-1, winning against Kuwait 3-2, and then losing to Saudi Arabia. This left them level on points, goals, and yellow cards with the latter.

After Iraq and Oman drew in all criteria, the competitions committee of the Gulf Football Association decided to resort to a draw to determine which of them would qualify for the semi-finals of the AFC Asian Cup, a mechanism that tipped the balance in favor of Oman over the Lions of Mesopotamia.

Iraq's experience in the tournament is currently under evaluation by the Iraq Football Association. Despite the rising calls for the coach's dismissal, there are three main reasons that grant Arnold immunity at this time.

In July, Graham Arnold's contract with the Iraq Football Association ended, and his future remained a major concern for local fans, who strongly demanded an extension and for him to continue in his position, despite the change in the federation's administration.

The new Iraqi Football Association, led by Younis Mahmoud, has successfully convinced the coach to renew his contract with the Lions of Mesopotamia. However, Arnold requested that his contract be short-term, lasting only 6 months, due to family circumstances and also because of his age, which will end in February, after Iraq's participation in the AFC Asian Cup 2027.

The time remaining for the AFC Asian Cup 2027 is very tight, with the Iraqi Football Association having only 3 months to prepare for this important competition. Iraq is looking to achieve the best results to determine its position and status at the continental level in Asia.

Bringing in a new coach at this time seems difficult and perhaps inappropriate, as the local federation wants to provide stability for the team and avoid making hasty or reactionary decisions. Therefore, Arnold is likely to continue at the helm of the coaching staff, despite the unwillingness of some members of the Iraqi Football Association for him to remain with the Lions of Mesopotamia.

Ahead of the Gulf Cup 27, a clear goal and strategy have been agreed upon during intensive meetings between Arnold and the Iraqi Federation. The focus will be on providing opportunities for new players during the tournament, which takes place during the international break.

Arnold has stipulated to the Iraqi Football Association that he will not demand results in the Gulf Cup matches, as the goal will be to experiment with a number of players and give young talents the opportunity to showcase their abilities.

Graham has given opportunities to players Youssef Al Nasrawi, Haydeer Abdulkareem, and Youssef Al Imam, along with striker Saif Rashid, who succeeded in scoring his first international goal.

Iraq is preparing to participate in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 early next year, playing in Group D alongside Australia, Tajikistan, and Singapore. The participation in the Gulf Cup, Al Khaleej 27, is part of the preparation plan for the anticipated Asian event.
