Botswana goalkeeper causes controversy over weight during Tunisia match

Botswana goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko sparked controversy during his country's match against Tunisia on Monday evening at the Hamadi Akhari Stadium in Rades, in the second round of Group 8 of the qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations 2027.

Goitseone Phoko has drawn attention not only for his performance but also for his noticeable weight gain, as the 31-year-old goalkeeper has shown a clear increase in weight, with a noticeable bulge in his stomach area, which has sparked widespread reactions on social media.

Despite his physical condition, the Botswana goalkeeper managed to thwart a dangerous attempt from Tunisia in the second half, confirming his presence in the match despite the controversy surrounding his appearance.

Goitseone Phoko currently plays for the South African side Siwelele, having previously represented Jwaneng Galaxy and Gaborone United in the Botswana league.

Botswana took the lead with a goal from Thatawan Kgamanian in the 37th minute, before Tunisia turned the match around with Hazem Al-Mestouri scoring twice in the 44th and 49th minutes.

Botswana equalized again in the 60th minute through Lebogang Ditsele, capitalizing on a clear defensive error from the Tunisia players.
