Tunisian Football Federation calls on fans to stop abusing Aymen Dahmen

The Tunisian Football Federation has broken its silence regarding the offensive chants aimed at Aymen Dahmen, the national team's goalkeeper, during the match against Uganda in the opening round of the Africa Cup of Nations Qualification 2027. This comes two days after the incident, which sparked widespread controversy in the Tunisian sports community.

The match between Tunisia and Uganda ended in a 1-1 draw, as part of the Africa Cup of Nations Qualification Group E, while the other match in the group saw Libya and Botswana finish 2-2.

The result of the match has sparked anger among Tunisian fans, with criticism directed at coach Moïne Chaâbani and several players. Aymen Dahmen was particularly targeted by some supporters, as fans behind his goal chanted mocking slogans against him during the second half, following Uganda's equalizer in the 67th minute.

Some fans have accused Tunisia goalkeeper Aymen Dahmen of causing the draw, while others held him responsible for what they described as a setback for the national team during the FIFA World Cup 2026. This scene has sparked widespread reactions, especially after clips of the incident circulated on social media.

The Tunisian Football Federation's stance came after a statement issued by Club Sportif Sfaxien, which defended its goalkeeper and condemned the chants and insults he faced, alongside the circulation of clips related to the incident on social media.

The Tunisian Football Federation has expressed its pride in the fans as the 'first supporter' of the national team and the '12th player'. However, it also called for maintaining a national spirit and avoiding verbal violence and hate speech, both inside stadiums and on social media platforms.

The federation emphasized the need to rise above club affiliations and unite around the Tunisian national team and the national flag as a unifying force for all components of Tunisian football.

The statement highlighted that supporting the 'Eagles of Carthage' in an atmosphere of respect and responsibility will contribute to providing the positive conditions needed by the players, as well as reflecting an image that befits the history and status of Tunisian football.

Tunisia are set to face Botswana on Monday, September 28, in the second round of Group E in Africa Cup of Nations Qualification, before playing a friendly against Mali on October 3, 2026.
