Manchester City chase Baena and Atlético close the exit door

Spanish winger Alex Baena has caught the attention of Manchester City, but the English club may face a tough task in securing the deal as Atlético are keen to keep the player.

According to sources from 'Football Insider', Atlético are not thinking about selling Baena in the near future, despite Manchester City being impressed by his abilities and placing him on their list of targets in the transfer market.

Baina holds an important position in coach Diego Simeone's plans, having started the current season strongly after impressive performances in recent times.

The Spanish winger is contracted to Atlético until 2030, giving the Madrid club a strong position in any potential negotiations. With negotiations with Atlético's management proving difficult, Manchester City will need to make a substantial financial offer that exceeds the usual value if they wish to secure the player's services.

Baina is 25 years old and has established himself as one of the standout wingers in La Liga, having made the official team of the season for 2024-2025 after contributing to 16 goals in 32 league matches.

His brilliance has led him to a move to Atlético last summer for an initial fee of £39 million, and since then he has managed to score five goals alongside providing assists, while continuing to showcase strong performances both individually and collectively.

Baina has not only excelled at the club level but has also made a new history during the summer by becoming the first player in football history to hold the titles of FIFA World Cup champion, European Championship champion, and Olympic champion simultaneously.

Manchester City had been searching until the final stages of the summer transfer window for a winger capable of playing on the left side, before finalising their deal for Iliman Ndiaye from Everton for £65 million.
