Marcello Gallardo appointed new coach of Ecuador
Argentine journalist Cézar Luis Merlo has announced, and it has been confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, that Marcello Gallardo has reached an agreement to take over as head coach of Ecuador, succeeding Sebastián Pékerman.
Marcelo Gallardo is set to sign a long-term contract until the FIFA World Cup 2030, marking his first experience at the helm of a national team, having previously managed Nacional, River Plate, and Al Ittihad.
The appointment of 'El Mono' is part of a long-term project for the Ecuadorian federation, targeting the Copa América 2028 and qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2030, alongside building a team capable of competing in upcoming major tournaments.
Pecassessi left his position after Ecuador's participation in the FIFA World Cup 2026, where the national team reached the Round of 32 before being eliminated by Mexico.
Gajardo is set to begin his role during the upcoming international break, with Ecuador scheduled to face friendly matches against South Korea and Japan.
