Kamil Saadi Faces Complicated Transfer Issue to Duhok
Iraq's goalkeeper Kamal Saadi is facing a complicated dilemma regarding his future with his club, despite the impressive level he showcased last season. This performance has led coach Graham Arnold to include him in the 'Lions of Mesopotamia' squad for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Kamil Saadi, 21, is considered one of the promising goalkeepers in Iraq. He stands out for his height and agility, showing significant development in recent times. The goalkeeper has progressed from the Olympic team to the senior national team after an impressive season in the Iraqi Premier League.
Duhok has announced the signing of Saadi to strengthen their goalkeeping department for the next season, having won the race for his signature despite interest from several prominent clubs. However, Erbil has rejected the deal, confirming that the goalkeeper's contract with them remains valid until next summer.
Arbil has maintained its position and filed an official complaint with the Iraqi Football Association, stating that the signed agreement with the goalkeeper extends for two seasons, not just one. Consequently, they consider his transfer to Duhok to be illegal.
Kamile Saadi has confirmed to Duhok's management that his association with Erbil has concluded, stating that he had previously agreed to a one-season contract only. Duhok's management is currently trying to defend the player's position before the Players and Coaches Affairs Committee of the Iraqi Federation, which has decided to officially open the case next Thursday.
The committee is seeking to find a solution that satisfies all parties by presenting settlement proposals. Among these is the attempt to convince Erbil to agree to the transfer in exchange for financial compensation, allowing the goalkeeper to complete his joining procedures with Duhok, which he has chosen over other offers.
Kamail Saadi participated in 30 matches out of 38 with Erbil during the 2025-2026 season of the Iraqi Premier League. He kept a clean sheet in 13 encounters, while his net was breached 20 times. These statistics placed him among the top goalkeepers in the tournament.
The young goalkeeper hopes that the issue will be resolved quickly so he can focus on preparing for the new season with his new team, and on maintaining his place in the national team lineup.
