Northern Clubs Become Top Destination for Iraq National Stars

In recent years, the Iraqi Premier League has witnessed a clear transformation in player choices, as northern region clubs have become the preferred destination for a significant number of Iraq national team stars, after previously being dominated by popular clubs that attracted the biggest names.

The summer transfer window kicked off in early July, and clubs began strengthening their squads. However, the northern clubs have been the most active this summer, becoming the primary destination for the majority of national team players.

Zakho has recently signed national team defender Mustafa Saadoun, while Duhok has added defender Manaf Younis. Meanwhile, Erbil continues negotiations to sign Lions of Mesopotamia striker Ayman Hussein, who scored Iraq's only goal in the 2026 World Cup against Norway in the opening round.

There are three main reasons that have led Iraqi players to change their focus from Baghdad and Basra to northern clubs such as Duhok, Erbil, Zakho, and Newroz, which are currently the most active in the transfer market, alongside their efforts to sign professionals from outside Iraq.

Northern clubs are distinguished by their organized management approach with players, especially concerning contract lengths, which are often for two seasons or more. An example of this is Amjad Attwan, who is entering his third season with Zakho.

Despite occasional delays in salary payments, clubs ensure that they are delivered later. These clubs also provide additional perks such as suitable housing and transportation, which grants players greater stability.

Northern clubs also excel financially, offering contracts that surpass those of most other teams. For instance, Mustafa Saadoun transferred to Zakho for 900 million Iraqi dinars.
