FIFA Suspends England Defender for Two Matches
England's defense takes a hit ahead of their World Cup 2026 quarter-final against Norway, as FIFA has suspended defender Jarell Quansah for two matches due to the red card he received during England's victory over Mexico in the Round of 16.
Quansah was sent off in the match that saw the 'Three Lions' advance to the quarter-finals, and according to tournament regulations, any red card in the World Cup results in an automatic suspension for the next match, as per Article 10.5 of the tournament rules.
FIFA confirmed in an official statement on Thursday, just two days before the England-Norway clash, that the punishment will include two matches, meaning the 23-year-old defender will also miss the semi-finals if his team progresses.
This leaves England's coach without one of his key defensive options not only against Norway but potentially in the semi-finals as well, should the team continue their quest for the title.
Reports indicate that the English Football Association was considering appealing the suspension, but the World Cup 2026 regulations do not provide a mechanism for appealing red card decisions, making the suspension final and enforceable.
