The Egyptian Football Association has officially requested the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) to open an investigation into the performance of French referee François Letexier and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) team, following controversial officiating decisions during the Round of 16 match between Egypt and Argentina in the 2026 World Cup.

The Egyptian FA stated in an official statement that it believes there were significant officiating errors that impacted the match result, particularly the failure to award a penalty to Egypt in the closing minutes, along with calls to review other contentious incidents that sparked widespread debate during the game.

The association emphasized that it has requested FIFA to review all recordings related to the referee and the VAR, and to verify adherence to officiating protocols, in order to uphold the principles of fairness and integrity in the competition. It also expressed confidence in the international officiating system while insisting on the Egyptian team's right to a fair assessment of what transpired during the match.

This move comes after a wave of criticism followed Egypt's 3-2 defeat to Argentina, a match that saw repeated protests from the coaching staff and players regarding several officiating decisions, notably the incident preceding Argentina's winning goal.
