Senegal Sweeps Iraq with a Five-Goal Victory in the World Cup
The Senegalese national team achieved a resounding victory over its Iraqi counterpart with a score of 5-0, in the final match of Group Nine in the 2026 World Cup.
Senegal did not wait long, as Abdoulaye Seck opened the scoring with a header from a corner kick in the third minute, giving the Lions of Teranga an early advantage.
The Iraqi shock came in the 13th minute, when Iraqi defender Rebin Ghareeb received a direct red card after a video assistant referee review, following his tackle on a Senegalese player who was one-on-one with the goal.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Iraq succeeded in organizing its defensive lines and held on until the end of the first half, keeping the difference to just one goal.
At the start of the second half, coach Pape Thiaw made offensive adjustments that invigorated the team, and the Senegalese goals followed thereafter.
Ismaïla Sarr scored the second goal in the 56th minute, and just three minutes later, Pape Gueye added the third in the 59th minute, then the same player returned to score the fourth goal in the 71st minute.
The fifth goal was completed by Elimane Ndiaye in the 82nd minute, securing a wide victory for Senegal.
With this victory, Senegal raised its points to three in third place, boosting its chances of qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams from each group, while Iraq remained without points in fourth and last place, officially bidding farewell to the World Cup.
