Younis Mahmoud Sends a Stern Message Before the Senegal Match
Hours before the kickoff, Younis Mahmoud, the President of the Iraqi Football Federation, sent a strong message to the football community and the media, ahead of the Lions of Mesopotamia's match against Senegal tomorrow, Friday, as part of the third and final round of the group stage of the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
The match will be held at the 'BMO Field' stadium in Toronto, Canada at 10:00 PM Baghdad and Mecca time. A large number of Iraqi communities in Canada have arrived in the city to support the team in a match considered the last chance to keep the dream of qualifying for the Round of 32 alive.
In his statements, Younis Mahmoud said: 'In recent days, there have been many statements from the Iraqi media, and some journalists have crossed the line with the national team players. I want to make it clear to everyone that I reject any offense directed at any player in the Lions of Mesopotamia. Constructive and objective criticism is a legitimate right for everyone, but defamation and crossing the line is a red line.'
The President of the Federation added: 'There are those who are still stuck in the atmosphere of the Football Federation elections. I affirm that this team represents Iraq and its people, not individuals or Federation members. We noticed how the fans and media of the teams that exited the tournament supported their teams, all stood behind the players and supported them until the last moment. Unfortunately, the scene in Iraq is different, and this is something we will not accept.'
Mahmoud explained: 'The Iraqi delegation has arrived at the hotel, and the players have settled in for rest and recovery. The team is putting in a great effort, but luck has not been on our side so far. We were placed in an extremely strong group that includes France, the world champion, Norway full of stars, and Senegal, the African champion. The interaction with these big schools has clearly benefited the players, and we have noticed development in the level of several names.'
He concluded his remarks by saying: 'We are awaiting the Senegal match, and the door to qualification is not yet closed. We hope the players will deliver a performance befitting the name of Iraq. My final message to the fans and media: Be the support and the backer at this critical time, as the team needs you more than ever.'
