Algerian Complaint Against Refereeing in Argentina Loss

Saturday 20-06-2026
The Algerian Football Federation submitted an official complaint to FIFA after losing 3-0 to Argentina in their World Cup opener, in a match that sparked widespread controversy over the refereeing.

According to the Algerian newspaper "Competition," the Algerian Football Federation objected to the lack of punishment for Lionel Messi after what it described as a dangerous tackle on the national team captain Aïssa Mandi. They also demanded punishment for Alexis Mac Allister for another tackle on player Ibrahim Maza.

The report indicated that the Algerian federation considered that the two incidents warranted review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, emphasizing that ignoring these interventions had a direct impact on the course of the match, especially with the possibility of Argentine players being sent off.

The same sources added that the complaint argues that the refereeing decisions deprived the Algerian team of the opportunity to play with a numerical advantage during crucial periods of the match, which contributed to widening the gap in favor of Argentina, while awaiting FIFA's response to these objections.
