Van Dijk Criticizes Netherlands' Performance and Comments on Slot's Departure
The captain of the Netherlands national team, Virgil van Dijk, expressed his dissatisfaction after his team lost 1-0 to Algeria in a friendly match as part of their preparations for the World Cup. He emphasized that the team lacked decisiveness in front of the goal despite dominating for long periods of the match.
Van Dijk said: "This is not what you want in a farewell match. After the first half, we should have been leading at least 2-0, but we didn't. I hope this sharpness comes very soon. For me, you have to punish your opponent when you have the chances and make things comfortable for yourself."
The Dutch defender, who watched the second half from the bench after numerous substitutions, added: "The positive thing is that most players got some playing time, but we don't play to lose, especially not on a night like this. Algeria performed well in my opinion, but we could have switched play from one side to the other faster. Clearly, things need to improve a lot and quickly. We have another chance on Monday."
Van Dijk also addressed the departure of Liverpool's coach Arne Slot, saying: "It was a surprise. I landed in Amsterdam on Saturday afternoon and the news had already leaked. No, no one consulted me about it. I found out through the media... I think that's the world we live in now. Everyone wants to be first. There are many people who benefit from that (journalists)."
He concluded by saying: "I spoke with Arne as well as with Sipke Hulshoff. I am very grateful to them for what they have contributed to the club. It's clear that next season must be better because what happened this season was below the standard of Liverpool Football Club."
