Due to Militao... The Central Defense Issue Returns to the Forefront at Real Madrid

Saturday 16-05-2026
The recent injury of Brazilian star Éder Militão, which is a tear in the proximal hamstring tendon in his left leg, has caused concern within the offices of Valdebebas.

The concern is not so much about the direct sporting damage for the remainder of a season where there are no longer major goals for the team, but rather about planning the team's roster in the near term. The defense line is currently considered the most sensitive position, even more so than the midfield.

This new injury confirms that Militão's physical structure is no longer the same after the two cruciate ligament injuries he suffered. On August 12, 2023, he sustained a tear in the cruciate ligament of his left knee during a match against Athletic Bilbao at San Mamés. More than a year later, in November 2024, he suffered a new complete tear in the anterior cruciate ligament with cartilage damage in the right knee, significantly impacting his career.

The Brazilian player started the current season with a new spirit under the guidance of former coach Xabi Alonso and was close to participating symbolically in the Club World Cup. Then, at the start of the local season, he reached a good physical level before suffering a new setback early last December against Celta Vigo, with an expected absence of four to five months.

As Militao was nearing a return to his best form again, and with the World Cup approaching, he suffered a new setback against Deportivo Alaves on April 21, where he sustained another tear in the same tendon and almost the same area. This was considered a relapse of the previous injury in December, confirming that muscle injuries have become recurrent for the player who has been affected by cruciate ligament injuries in both knees.

This situation has prompted Real Madrid to reassess their defensive strategy, after believing the issue was resolved with Militao returning to his best form, alongside Antonio Rüdiger's readiness following his recovery from knee problems, and the addition of Dejan Haussen as a future prospect, with Raúl Asensio as an alternative option. However, with uncertainty surrounding Militao's condition, signing a new defender has become a priority for the club.

The club is also considering academy solutions, with the option to enhance the role of Juan Martinez, who is highly trusted, alongside monitoring the progress of Jacobo Ramon, who is on loan to Italian club Como, with the possibility of recalling him for a fee of less than 10 million euros.

Nevertheless, Real Madrid is still searching for a top defender capable of leading the defense line in the future alongside Haussen, and possibly Militao if he regains his form. Meanwhile, the club's plan has relied on smart deals similar to the signings of David Alaba and Antonio Rüdiger, who joined for free and achieved great success.

Among the names being discussed, the Frenchman Ibrahima Konaté remains the only name still strongly considered, as his contract with Liverpool expires next June and he has not yet renewed it. Meanwhile, both Dayot Upamecano with Bayern Munich and William Saliba with Arsenal have renewed their contracts, and Marc Guehi, who Real Madrid was interested in, moved to Manchester City during the last winter transfer window.

Thus, everything remains open within Real Madrid, given the uncertainty caused by Militao's new injury.
