Atletico Madrid announced that American midfielder Johnny Cardoso underwent successful surgery today, Tuesday, following an injury he sustained during team training last week, which caused him to miss the Rojiblancos' training sessions.

Atletico Madrid clarified in an official statement that Cardoso suffered a severe ankle sprain with a joint injury during the team's training held last Thursday, before undergoing surgery on his right ankle, confirming that the procedure went as planned.

The Spanish club added in its statement: 'We wish you all the best and strength, Johnny, and we hope for your speedy and full recovery from your injury,' without disclosing the duration of the player's absence or his return date to the pitch.

Cardoso's injury raises doubts about his participation in the 2026 World Cup, scheduled to start next June.
