Emery: From Emergency Coach in Third Division to Greatest Europa League Coaches
Friday 08-05-2026
The name of Spanish coach Unai Emery has returned to the spotlight once again after leading Aston Villa to the Europa League final, marking his sixth final in his career, during which he has won four titles out of five finals.

Emery is considered one of the coaches who have built an exceptional career away from the traditional spotlight, having made his way from the lower divisions in Spain to the pinnacle of European football, achieving historic successes with several clubs before transforming Aston Villa into a new European force.

Emery's story began in 2004 when he was a player for Lorca Deportiva, active in the Spanish third division, but he suffered an injury that ended his season early. With the coaching position vacant, the club president decided to give him the opportunity to lead the team, and surprisingly, Emery succeeded in guiding Lorca to promotion to the second division for the first time in the club's history, marking the beginning of his strong emergence in Spanish football.

This rapid success prompted Almeria to sign him, and there he repeated the achievement on a larger scale, after leading the team to promotion to the Spanish La Liga for the first time in its history, confirming that what he achieved with Lorca was not a coincidence, but the beginning of a career for a coach with a unique personality and a great ability to develop teams.

He then took over coaching Valencia during a difficult period, especially with the departure of several of the team's top stars like David Villa and David Silva. Despite this, he maintained the club's competitiveness and led them to finish third in La Liga during his last three seasons with the team, behind Barcelona and Real Madrid, who were dominating Spanish football as usual.

Emery had a brief stint with Spartak Moscow, but it was unsuccessful, prompting his swift return to Spain through the doors of Sevilla. There, he made history by leading the club to three consecutive UEFA Europa League titles, defeating Benfica, Dnipro, and Liverpool in the finals, eventually becoming the most decorated manager in the tournament's history.

Emery's successes with Sevilla led him to coach Paris Saint-Germain, where he achieved the usual domestic titles. However, he did not succeed in Europe, especially after the historic exit against Barcelona in the famous comeback, followed by elimination at the hands of Real Madrid the following season.

In 2018, he took over as Arsenal's coach, succeeding Arsène Wenger. Although his experience in London is often remembered negatively, the Spanish coach achieved an impressive streak of 11 consecutive victories and 22 matches without defeat, numbers Arsenal hadn't achieved in many years.

He also led the team to the Europa League final before losing to Chelsea. Additionally, he played a significant role in promoting several talents, most notably Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe. However, media pressure, along with a decline in results, led to his dismissal in 2019.

Emery returned to Spain once again through Villarreal, where he rewrote history by leading the team to win the Europa League after defeating Manchester United in the final, following the elimination of Arsenal in the semi-finals, achieving his fourth title in the tournament. He also made a significant achievement in the 2022 Champions League by knocking out Juventus and Bayern Munich to reach the semi-finals, before his journey ended against Liverpool.

In October 2022, Aston Villa decided to hire Emery after a difficult period the team experienced under Steven Gerrard's leadership, and the English club paid 6 million euros to terminate his contract with Villarreal. At that time, the team was close to the relegation zone, but the Spanish coach made a significant turnaround in just a few months, leading the team from sixteenth to seventh place by the end of the season.

In the 2023/24 season, the team finished fourth in the league, and Aston Villa qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 41 years, reaching the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain. Despite this, Villa put up a strong fight, even winning 3-2 at Villa Park, but lost on aggregate after a 3-1 defeat in Paris.

Earlier this year, Emery reached 100 victories with Aston Villa, becoming the fastest manager to achieve this in the club's history. He is currently in the Champions League spots and has reached the Europa League final. He transformed Villa from a team struggling with relegation when he arrived, into a consistently present European team.
