CAF Freezes Proposal to Increase Clubs in the African Champions League
Sunday 03-05-2026
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has temporarily resolved its stance on the proposal that would have changed the dynamics of the African Champions League, which involved increasing the number of participating clubs from major associations. This decision came after facing a significant organizational obstacle that prevented its implementation at the present time.

The Confederation of African Football postponed the decision on the proposal to increase the number of clubs participating in the African Champions League for the top 12 ranked associations, after it became clear that implementing it under the current circumstances is practically impossible.

Data revealed that the issue is not so much related to the decision itself as it is to the difficulty of implementing it on the ground. Increasing the number of clubs will directly lead to an increase in the number of matches, especially in the preliminary rounds, which requires additional time that is not available within the current schedule of African competitions.

The sources added that the start of the football season will coincide with the African Cup of Nations qualifiers, which will be held in Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya, with the finals to be played at the end of the season. This creates immense pressure on the match schedule and makes adding new fixtures extremely complicated.

The proposal aimed to give major federations the opportunity to involve three or four clubs instead of two in the Champions League, a move that would have ignited competition and enhanced the marketing and fan value of the tournament.

The list of concerned federations includes Morocco, Algeria, Angola, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Libya, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Africa, Sudan, Tunisia, and Tanzania. These countries currently benefit from two spots in the CAF Champions League and two in the Confederation Cup.

With this decision, it seemed that the proposal was temporarily postponed indefinitely, pending the identification of a suitable timeframe, given the unprecedented congestion in the African football agenda in the upcoming period.
