Hagi Returns to Lead Romania with Great Ambitions: 'I Was Born to Win'
Tuesday 21-04-2026
The Romanian football legend Gheorghe Hagi officially announced that he will be taking over as the coach of the Romanian national team for the second time in his career, during a press conference held in the capital, Bucharest.

Hagi signed a four-year contract, stating that his new role represents a great honor and a huge responsibility, as well as being a real challenge to bring the team back to the forefront.

The 61-year-old coach did not hide his high ambitions, emphasizing that his goal is to win every match, strive for success in the UEFA Nations League, and qualify for the 2028 European Championship.

Hagi said, "I was born to win, not just to exist," clearly referring to his competitive nature and his desire to restore the glory of Romanian football.

Hagi's return comes more than 25 years after his first experience with the national team, which lasted only a short period in 2001. He explained that he is now more experienced and mature, noting that he has become "a completely different coach" compared to his early days, which he relies on to lead a new phase for the team.

Hagi succeeds the late coach Mircea Lucescu, who recently passed away at the age of 80. Lucescu played a significant role in Hagi's career as a player, giving him his first international opportunity and making him the national team captain at a young age.

Hagi hopes to bring Romania back to major tournaments, especially after their long absence from the World Cup since 1998.
