A Strong Boost for Saudi Clubs in the Asian Elite League and Asia 2
Monday 20-04-2026
Media reports have revealed a move within the Asian Football Confederation to approve a new mechanism for distributing continental slots, granting Saudi clubs a broader presence in the AFC Champions League for the elite and the AFC Champions League 2.

The sources explained that the new proposal grants Saudi Arabia six seats, equal to Japan at the top of the distribution, in a move that reflects the rising strength of Saudi clubs at the continental level.

The anticipated distribution includes three direct spots in the Elite League, along with two spots through the playoffs, in addition to a direct spot in the AFC Champions League 2.

This approach represents a clear leap compared to the current system, which grants Saudi clubs three direct spots in the elite league and only one spot in the second-tier tournament.

This development is supported by the strong results recently achieved by Saudi clubs, with Al-Ahli reaching the semi-finals of the Elite League, while Al-Nassr advanced to the semi-finals of the AFC Champions League 2.

According to the proposed plan, the UAE and South Korea will each receive five seats, while Qatar and Thailand will get four seats, in a distribution that reshuffles the balance of competition.

The decision, once officially adopted, is expected to enhance Saudi Arabia's presence in Asia and open the door for more clubs to participate in continental tournaments in the coming seasons.
