Simeone: Fans Only Need Victory, and There's Nothing to Say to the Players
Sunday 19-04-2026
Diego Simeone, the coach of Atletico Madrid, spoke after his team's loss in the Spanish King's Cup final to Real Sociedad on penalties, expressing his sadness about the result and affirming that his team gave their all during the match.

Simeone said: "After the first goal, we returned to a low rhythm with little intensity, while the second half was how we should have played. We reached a 2-2 draw and could have scored a third goal through either Cardoso or Baena. Then we went into extra time, where there was a chance for each team. We competed very well, and the players gave their all, but unfortunately, this time the penalty shootout was in their favor. We congratulate them."

He continued: "There isn't much to say to the players, just to be close to them. They know they put in a great effort and played a very good second half and extra time. The match was supposed to be decided in 90 minutes, with opportunities for Johnny and Baina. This time, they were effective, and we were not."

He added: "The question of decreased energy in extra time is related to the fact that the team played 90 minutes against Barcelona, and there might have been a drop, but except for the first ten minutes of extra time, we performed well and gave it our all."

He said, "The fans need victories, they don't need messages or talk, they just need wins."

He continued: "Yes, there was a lack of energy, but this is also related to the start of the first half, where we did not enter the match well. Then we improved after the 15th minute, and the goal came, but then we returned to a lack of intensity and ball recovery."

He added, "I'm not thinking about Arsenal right now. What happened today hurts me a lot. We needed to win and we didn't succeed, but we know we gave it our all, and that gives me some peace."

He concluded his remarks by saying: "In substituting Lookman, I saw that with Sorloth as a striker, we could have more opportunities, and I thought that Julian and then Baena could offer what Lookman was providing. They are very important players for us, and I made the decision based on that."
