Liverpool Settles Debate Over Slot's Succession
Friday 17-04-2026
Recent press reports have revealed Liverpool's stance on hiring Spanish coach Xabi Alonso to succeed the current manager Arne Slot, during the next season.

Journalist David Ornstein confirmed that Liverpool does not currently have Alonso in their coaching plans, indicating that the club's management intends to keep Slot in his position for the next season.

Ornstein explained that Fenway Sports Group, the club's owner, does not intend to dismiss Slot despite disappointing results, which included exiting the UEFA Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain, along with losing all titles this season.

Ornstein said: "I am not aware of Alonso being on Liverpool's agenda, and this may not please some, but I only convey the information I verify at the time, and if proven otherwise, everyone can criticize me."

He added: "The owners' approach is to continue with Slot, and naturally if things go completely wrong, the situation might change, but so far there are no indications of a managerial change, and Slot's contract extends until 2027, with no current negotiations for an extension, and I have no information suggesting Alonso is a candidate to succeed him."

Slot is expected to lead a comprehensive rebuilding phase within Liverpool's ranks during the upcoming summer transfer period, amid the potential departure of Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson as the club seeks to strengthen the first team by signing four new players.
