UEFA Threatens to Withdraw Euro 2032 from Italy
Aleksander Čeferin, the President of UEFA, warned that Italy might lose the hosting rights for Euro 2032 if the stadiums and infrastructure are not improved, despite being granted the joint hosting rights with Turkey.
Ceferin explained in statements to "La Gazzetta dello Sport" that holding the tournament on schedule is certain, but he expressed doubts about Italy's ability to meet the hosting requirements, affirming that the current state of the stadiums is among the worst in Europe.
The UEFA president pointed out that Italy has not hosted any major tournaments since the 1990 World Cup, with most of the stadiums dating back to that period without sufficient development, which increases the challenges ahead of the tournament.
Ceferin also criticized the relationship between sports entities and political authorities in Italy, considering it a major obstacle to the development of football infrastructure and the improvement of facility readiness.
Italy is expected to finalize the list of five stadiums that will host the tournament from among 11 candidate cities, including prominent ones like Rome, Milan, Naples, and Turin, as part of preparations for organizing the continental event, by next October.
